Junior 2006

Junior Tournament 2006

Matches were played in three age groups: under 10s, under 14s and under 18s - both doubles and singles. Knockout rounds were mainly completed during the weekly 'Junior nights', on Fridays, and the finals were held on Sunday 17 September. It was a gloriously warm and sunny autumn day and the standard of tennis from all competitors was very high.

Under 10s: Sam Bracken beat Greg Bothwell in a close match for the under 10s singles title, and together they beat Mobeen Hanid and Jake Staples for the doubles.

Under 14s: Oliver Webb beat James Bothwell in the singles, and together they beat Sam Bracken and Greg Bothwell in the doubles.

Under 18s: Alex Mangan beat Stuart Cox in the singles. Alex and Stuart then lost to Sam Wright and Owen Wadey in the doubles. Under 18s matches were played as the best of three sets.

Special awards 2006

The Jenny Hole cup - this cup is for the most sociable junior member and was awarded to Stuart Cox.

The Pat Ewen cup for the most improved junior - this brand new cup was presented to Liam McCrory by Don Ewen.

The Junior Members' Player of the year (in memory of Pat Ewen) - Don Ewen presented this new cup to Alex Mangan, who had been voted the best junior tennis player by the other junior members.

Adult and Junior tournament 2006

This tournament is arranged annually to give adult members the chance to play both with and against their children, in a competitive situation. However the emphasis is on having fun. The event took place on Sunday 1 October and the weather forecast was not encouraging. Even so, the rain held off all morning and we got underway at 1.30pm sharp. By 2pm the rain was lashing down and we all made a run for the clubhouse. 10 minutes later it had stopped, and there were plenty of willing helpers to sweep the surface water off courts 4 and 5. Twice more this happened, but we did not give up and managed to complete 6 rounds.

The final saw Oliver Webb and Mark Gatt playing James Bothwell and Michael Wollan, with James and Michael just clinching it in a fantastic final game.
