Winter Tournament 2008

The weather failed to stop the finals of Horley Lawn Tennis Club's Winter Handicap tournament on Saturday. Despite the wintry conditions, all finals were completed with only a few breaks during rain and hail storms.

In the Ladies Singles, relative newcomer Rachel Rodd beat the more experienced Fran Johnson 8-5, while in the mens' old hand Steve Whittle overwhelmed youngster Liam McCrory 8-2.

A long ladies' doubles match saw Kelly Johnson and Kerry Akehurst run out winners against Gill Cox and Jo Rosendale 8-4.

The mens' doubles was the match of the day despite a seemingly one sided scoreline of 8-3, but Steve Whittle and Abdul Hanid eventually overcame Alec Lugg and David Tripp.

The mixed doubles was played in very difficult conditions, with the court being very wet. This appeared to upset the game of Vee Yeabsley and David Orsborn, who lost to Fran Johnson and Sunny Lau 8-5.
